Fall is progressing quite nicely as we head toward the the third weekend of October, with bright yellows as the dominant color in our neck of the woods, 2,300 feet in elevation inside Pisgah National Forest east of Asheville. Read on for tips on where to spot great color this week and next.
Early October is bringing us pops of fall color and it’s making us very happy! We’re so lucky to be inside Pisgah National Forest, watching the season progress and while Mother Nature has a way to go with her fall color show, we are liking Act 1 so far.
Welcome to our weekly fall color reports for 2020. We’ve been doing these fall foliage updates for several years now and this is the first year in a while where we can say that this first week of the season has been showing some real potential for fabulous early color… let’s discuss!
Autumn is finally here, and with six to eight weeks of great fall color ahead, the mountains of Western North Carolina are sure to bring inspiration and joy. And sweater weather, yay! The Asheville area has one of the longest fall seasons in the world, and we’re just getting started with week 1 of our fall foliage reports. Let’s begin!
Well, if Mother Nature took her foot off the gas the past couple of weeks with regard to the changing fall colors, she seems to also be braking a little bit! Contrary to expert predictions at the beginning of the season, we are NOT having an early fall, but rather a late one. With Week 5 upon us, let’s see where the fall color is.

Our first snow of the winter season arrived on January 6, 2017, blanketing Pisgah National Forest around Asheville, including our neck of the woods at the Inn on Mill Creek with several inches of beauty. Stillness. Peaceful. Calming. Quiet. A great way to kick off the new year.

Winter Storm Jonas visited us on January 22, 2016, blanketing the ground with snow and resulting in a pristine winter landscape for us to enjoy over the next couple of days (next weekend’s forecast…60 degrees!).
As we move further into October, some areas of western North Carolina are at or near peak in terms of fall foliage. It’s rather impressive at elevations higher than 4,000 feet. And between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, large patches of Mother Nature’s perfect fall color palette can be found.
