“Peak week” for fall color has arrived in our neck of the woods, between Black Mountain and Old Fort, NC (2,300 feet in elevation). The Inn on Mill Creek B&B is situated two miles inside Pisgah National Forest, and with so many different tree types, we are seeing large bursts of varying color all around!
The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League (A3L) in Old Fort, NC, recently held its 2014 Battle of the Brushes, a plein air art competition, where nearly 20 artists painted scenes of the Old Fort area. Judges chose Judy Meyler’s depiction of the Thomas Wolfe Angel statue in the Old Fort Cemetery as the first place winner. Love the colors!

Summer is here and that means a myriad of songs are brought to us each day by nature here at the Inn on Mill Creek B&B inside Pisgah National Forest: bullfrogs, crickets and of course, birds, to name a few. And you know if something has “song” in its name, you can count on it being part of nature’s summer live concert series. Thus, we’ve given the Song Sparrow our June entry in our 12 Months of Birding at the Inn series on the blog for 2014.

Exciting news: All of the towns around the Inn on Mill Creek Bed & Breakfast — Asheville, Black Mountain, and Old Fort, North Carolina — will have fireworks displays this year! Of course, there are other events going on, and if you want to avoid the crowds, we can help with that as well. Here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods during the 4th of July weekend:

Since the Inn on Mill Creek Bed & Breakfast is getting a little herb garden makeover this year (more on that later this month), we are super excited about the 10th Annual Painters Greenhouse Herb Festival, the weekend of April 12-13, 2014. Painters Greenhouse is one of our favorite locally-owned nurseries, located near the Inn on Mill Creek, in Old Fort, NC.
With Spring just a week away, we’re daydreaming of warm breezes, verdant mountain vistas, wildflowers galore, spring songbirds and…well, we thought we’d go ahead and make a list of ten reasons to visit the mountains of Western North Carolina in springtime. What is there to see and do in Spring in the NC mountains?
Winter blahs getting you down? Looking forward to thawing out and getting outdoors this spring? It’s not too far away for us here in the mountains of western North Carolina! The Inn on Mill Creek B&B is located in McDowell County, North Carolina, about halfway between the towns of Old Fort and Black Mountain. Our county is known for its outdoor recreation, with awesome hiking trails and mountain biking trails, trout fishing streams and waterfalls, great places to walk and plenty of areas to explore nature.
