The winners of the 21st Annual National Gingerbread House Competition were crowned earlier this month at an awards ceremony at OMNI Grove Park Inn. There were more than 150 entries this year, made of entirely edible materials!

Fall 2013 BLUE to BLACK Art Weekend is Nov. 15-17

We’re really excited to share that one of our favorite Black Mountain art events is just around the corner: the Fall 2013 BLUE to BLACK Art Weekend (formerly known as the East of Asheville Studio to Tour – E.A.S.T.) is November 15-17. It’s an art stroll and studio tour, celebrating our local artists from east of the Blue Ridge Parkway to Black Mountain, hence Blue to Black. We are a proud sponsor of this event.

Welcome to our seventh and final weekly Fall Color Report for the North Carolina Mountains around Asheville, Black Mountain, and Old Fort. It makes us a little bit sad to know that this is our last report on fall foliage for the year, but we still have some color on the trees and before we know it, spring will be here. Guess we do have to get through winter first. But until then…

Late October brings us to Week 5 of our Fall Color Reports for the North Carolina Mountains near Black Mountain, Asheville and Old Fort. Finally! Mother Nature has turned up the color at our elevation of 2,300 feet inside Pisgah National Forest, three miles east of Black Mountain.
North Carolina Mountain Birds: Belted Kingfisher
There’s just something endearing about animals with big heads and little bodies. It might be one of the reason we own pugs… but it’s also the reason why we love the Belted Kingfisher, our October bird in our 12 Months of Birding at the Inn series for 2013.

While we’re not quite ready to break out our Christmas decorations and sing carols, we’re definitely looking forward to 2013 Christmas at Biltmore beginning November 2, because, well, they’ve known how to do a spectacular Christmas celebration ever since George Washington Vanderbilt opened his Asheville home to family and friends on Christmas Eve of 1895.
