American Craft Week, a celebration of handmade craft work, takes place October 5-14 this year. Here are some ways you check out items handcrafted by our local artisans and craftspeople:
Take the East of Asheville Studio Tour (East Asheville, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Fairview): On October 13 and October 14, dozens of our area’s artists will open their studios to the public for EAST — the East of Asheville Studio Tour. This free self-guided tour features several different art and craft styles and is a great way to discover local art.
Check out a local gallery or art/craft shop (Black Mountain; Old Fort; Asheville): We are fortunate to be located near several great galleries and shops that are participating in American Craft Week: Gingko Tree Gallery (a custom frame shop and photo gallery), Visions of Creation (a handcrafted designer jewelry gallery), and Seven Sisters Gallery, which features fine arts and crafts, in Black Mountain; Turtle Island Pottery in Old Fort; and Ariel Craft Gallery, Blue Spiral 1, Grovewood Gallery, Haw Creek Forge, New Morning Gallery, and Mountain Made in Asheville, just to name a few. View the entire list and each gallery/shop’s website here.
Visit the Folk Art Center (Asheville): The Folk Art Center is located just off the Highway 70 entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway in East Asheville, at Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 382, about 20 minutes from the Inn on Mill Creek. The Folk Art Center is open daily and features work by craftspeople of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, as well as live craft demonstrations. During American Craft Week, the Main Gallery will house “Black & White 3”, an exhibit featuring nearly 100 artists from the Guild. Admission and parking are free.
Browse local craft at Asheville Art in the Park (Asheville): Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville hosts the Art in the Park craft market on October 6, October 13, and October 20. This is the fourth year for Art in the Park, which showcases handcrafted glass, metal, ceramics, wood and jewelry.
